After the October 8 outage, businesses are recounting what it costs to store data. Anton Averyanov explained why an own server can cost more than a data center

About the news
On October 8, after an incident at Yandex data centers in the Ryazan region and Kaluga, websites of media outlets, banks, mobile operators and classifieds services stopped opening. Kommersant FM's sources believe that businesses will have to spend more on data storage
The experts interviewed by the outlet advise making backups and spreading data across several data centers in different regions. Such a setup is more reliable but more expensive: in effect, a company pays twice to store the same data
Expert commentary
Only a few large companies can afford their own data center, while a small or medium business usually needs a single server. ST IT CEO Anton Averyanov told Kommersant FM that such a server can be built even for 1 million rubles, but maintaining it costs more
Equipment wears out, so depreciation has to be planned: a graphics card, for example, lasts about five years. Electricity becomes a noticeable expense, and in case of failures one or two people are needed to stay close to the server or fix incidents quickly
All of this adds up to monthly costs that can be even higher than those of a third-party data center, Anton Averyanov noted. According to the outlet's sources, maintaining a small server costs at least 100 thousand rubles a month
